I've been looking into Delver's Guide to the Beast World. I don't know how balanced it is for D&D 5e. I'm falling in love with how they are running their dragon race because they are not boxing them in by alignment/color. They shifted them to archetypes like your Reds and Golds are Monarchs. So they are your leaders. Blacks and Bronzes are your scholars. It still color locks to a degree but is taking it in a different direction. It doesn't feel like a cast system mechanically, leaving it optional to rp it that way.
